Psychosocial support (PSU for short) is an important pillar of the official health management of the NRW police - and is now being further expanded with regional offices in Bielefeld, Dortmund, Düsseldorf, Essen, Cologne and Münster.

Dealing with work-related incidents - which employees experience as stressful - is both a task and a challenge for the police. Police psychologists make a major contribution to ensuring that police employees in NRW are able to cope with the constant challenges of everyday police work. They work in a varied field in which both their psychosocial and professional-scientific skills are in demand.

From counselling police officers who have been affected by a difficult assignment, to carrying out group supervision in the criminal investigation department, to giving talks on destigmatizing psychological stress - they carry out important preventative work and offer help for those who are helping.

The work of a psychologist in the psychosocial support structures of the NRW police includes advising and supporting all police employees in the state of NRW with a view to maintaining and restoring their mental health. The tasks are multifaceted and range from the provision of various counseling and support services to indispensable preventive work on psychosocial issues.

Psychologists as contact persons in the NRW police force

Throughout their careers, police officers are confronted with a wide variety of situations, events and tasks that can result in a high level of physical and psychological stress. A range of psychosocial support services are available to enable them to deal with this in an adequate, healthy and professional manner and thus prevent the negative consequences of stress. Police psychologists play an important role here.

Her tasks include providing advice and support for individuals, teams and groups as well as the further development of counseling concepts. Cooperation with other PSU helpers (e.g. police chaplaincy or police medical service) is also part of their fixed range of tasks. These services are primarily preventative in nature. If necessary, clients are supported in their search for suitable contact points within the healthcare system.
