The criminal investigation department not only carries out operational work in the police stations, but also in the criminal investigation task forces in the local police authorities. The approach of these police officers is much more conspiratorial. You can get an impression of the often undercover investigation methods in this film by the LKA NRW. The State Office of Criminal Investigation also has task forces that show their exciting day-to-day work in the observation teams there.

They are specialists in internet and darknet investigations. With sound qualifications in the IT sector, they investigate digital crimes. They know how to convict perpetrators in the non-real world. This is a booming area in which many curious employees will be needed in the future.

Different core fields, one goal. Making the digital space more secure. Attacks on critical infrastructure, money laundering, drug and arms trafficking, child pornography - the list of illegal activities on the darknet is long. When combating such crimes in our country's police authorities, the motto is always: stay one step ahead of the criminals.

The Cybercrime Competence Center of the LKA NRW is home to investigation commissions for outstanding cyber attacks, experts in computer forensics, IT development, telecommunications monitoring, evaluation, analysis and prevention, as well as OSINT research and the Central Evaluation and Collection Center for Child Pornography.

Here they go into detail and sometimes take a little more time to solve crimes against the general public or with high amounts of damage. Although white-collar crime, corruption and environmental crimes only account for less than one percent of criminal offenses, they cause up to 50 percent of the damage of all criminal offenses. The perpetrators are clever, as are the investigators.

Under the motto "Follow the money", financial investigators in police authorities throughout NRW and in the LKA analyze money flows and track them down in order to trace and siphon off illegally acquired assets. Their mission: to catch the criminals. Verena Braun is one of them at the LKA in Düsseldorf. Watch the video to find out more about her work.

Investigators for sexual offenses

For example, they investigate cases of sexual abuse, rape, sexual harassment and child pornography. To do this, the criminalists collect evidence, interview victims, witnesses and perpetrators and work closely with other specialists, for example from forensics, psychology and the public prosecutor's office. The work requires sensitivity, professionalism and a deep understanding of the legal and psychological aspects of sexual offenses.

Among sexual offenses, the processing of child pornography and sexual abuse of children is very important because children need special protection. Child pornography is usually the result of real sexual abuse. It is often not known who the victims and perpetrators in the photos and videos are. If investigators manage to find out, they can free children from ongoing abuse situations. Investigative work then goes hand in hand with child protection.

This job is not for everyone. It is a job with insight into the abysses of human behavior. The ambition to catch the perpetrators is therefore particularly great for the investigators. Those who work successfully here reap recognition and experience deep satisfaction for this important service to humanity.

In the video, Stephanie Eckermann and Eva Neudeck give an insight into their work at the criminal investigation department in Cologne.

Murder is never time-barred. This offense cannot be topped in terms of reprehensibility, which is why homicide investigation is the supreme discipline in the criminal investigation department. According to the Criminal Code, murder characteristics such as murderous intent, greed, cruelty or malice aforethought are what make the killing of a person a murder.

In this article, Julika Böhlendorf explains that her work is sometimes like a movie, but that she always investigates the motive for the crime with the utmost meticulousness and perseverance.

Your path to the criminal investigation department

How do I become a detective superintendent?

After studying to become a police commissioner, you will first spend a year on guard duty at a district police authority. In 14 of the 47 district police authorities, this can be followed by two years in the local riot police. In the best case scenario, you can decide to switch to the criminal investigation department after just one year. The demand for new criminal investigation officers is currently very high in many district police authorities in NRW. This is why there is always the opportunity to join the criminal investigation department straight after graduation.
