Science in the fight against crime
The surveying division, in which the entire spectrum of crime scene surveying and visualization, visual search aids and image and video technology are processed, is located in the Forensic Institute of the NRW Police. This is where comprehensive scientific, forensic and identification investigations are carried out in criminal cases to solve crimes. This involves examining and evaluating relevant evidence, particularly from serious crimes.
In the field of surveying, engineers specializing in surveying, geodesy, geoinformatics or photogrammetry are employed.

Surveyor LKA NRW
As surveying engineers, you work at the State Office of Criminal Investigation in the field of crime scene surveying. With your work, you preserve crime scenes for eternity and ensure that crime scenes can be re-visited at any time and important investigative leads can be obtained. You evaluate the crime scene scans from your 3D laser scanner on the PC and can thus determine the direction of shots fired and the size of the perpetrators, for example. This makes an important contribution to solving crimes.
These are your career opportunities with the NRW police
Engineers in surveying, geodesy, geoinformatics or photogrammetry
In the field of surveying, the North Rhine-Westphalia police employ engineers from the above-mentioned disciplines as clerks for crime scene surveying and visualization.
They are responsible for extensive data collection and documentation at various types of crime, incident or accident scenes, in particular in the case of crimes (homicides), attacks, rampages and other outstanding offenses using 3D laser scanning and/or photogrammetry measurement and documentation techniques. They create true-to-scale representations of 3D laser scan data or drone images and evaluate these to create image portfolios, true-to-scale floor plans, digital sections, 2D drawings, 3D models, orthophotos and for volume calculations.
The employees reconstruct and depict firing directions in collaboration with shooting experts. They also determine and depict fields of vision of people at crime and incident scenes and determine perpetrator sizes on the basis of images or surveillance footage.
The employees then present their findings independently in court.
The employees are also involved in quality management. They test and implement technical innovations for the development of new measurement methods or forensic crime reconstructions. The employees also have an advisory and support function for the police authorities of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia with regard to all surveying processes.
