Science in the fight against crime

In the Laboratory and Forensics department, comprehensive scientific, forensic and identification investigations are carried out in criminal cases to solve criminal offenses. This involves examining and evaluating evidence from serious crimes in particular.

Natural scientists from various disciplines, such as biologists, chemists, physicists, forensic scientists and many more, are responsible for this.

As a biologist, Kathy Kuntze heads the serology and DNA analysis department at the State Office of Criminal Investigation. A total of 85 employees work here. Biologists with a doctorate in biology examine the investigation requests from the criminal investigation department and determine the strategy for the investigation. Their technical assistants carry out the investigation in the laboratory and evaluate evidence relevant to the crime. By evaluating crime-relevant evidence, they make an important contribution to solving crimes.
